Dude is fast

At the USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championship Eneas was so fast, a race official questioned, "if he rode the whole course?" That is fast!!

Over at the USAT Eneas is quoted,
"I went to school here at the University of Richmond, so it was kind of a homecoming for me and my family. I hadn’t been here in a long time,” said men’s 30-34 age group winner Eneas Freyre, 33, Norwalk, Conn. “The bike course was nice; it was fast, which I like. And I recognized the roads, so I had no problems. The run course was a little challenging with some of the corners. It was a great venue. The people are really friendly. It’s nice to come down here and visit.”

What a weekend...

First, we had a beautiful ride on Saturday with a great group. Carlos, Suzie and Matt led the training ride. We had 3 groups riding well together. The great weather combined with a great route for 42 mile ride and 30 miles created big smiles on many faces. Flowers were in bloom everywhere, bikes hummed; it was all a fantastic experience.

Back at the ranch, we had two good pilates sessions, and Justin was dispensing one on one attention to a myriad of clients, while also helping to lead the 10 AM indoor cycling session. Two clients were riding their beautiful new Scott CR1's, almost ready for the long trek outdoors -- they'll soon get there! With big smiles on because it was a site to see -- everyone getting ready for the ride.

As Eneas said in his brief post from Virginia, we had a group competing in the USA National Duathlon Championships. We now have 2 national champions as well as a third place (podium). Eneas is now the Duathlon National Champion for the 30-34 age group. He won by 3 minutes despite losing 2 minutes because someone moved his bicycle in the transition zone. It was a 10K run, 38K ride and then a 5K run. Eneas of course posted the fastest bike split of the day. He used a Cervelo P3C with Zipp 1080's and a Zipp sub-zero disc. Plus Eneas ran on Newton shoes. Trevor McLean became the 16-19 age group "Off-Road" Duathlon Champion with a blistering time across all three legs of the 5K run, 11K bike and 3K run in-the-woods course. And Max Veiga got 3rd in his age group to grab the final podium spot. He also ran a great race. Congrats to Sam Goater, who competed and completed the off-road race despite a mechanical. If you think it was hot here, you can imagine the temperature in Richmond Virginia.

The Minuteman Race at Westport CT's Compo Beach was also a great morning out for everyone. We had a great tent set up with running shoes and bikes and stuff. Jeff Sparling, Michael Ginghina and little Max there helping everyone. We had a fantastic level of participation. Among others running in both the 5K and 10K event, there were Kim Driscoll, Loren Benjamin, Sally Kadoux and her husband Peter, Whtiney Ross, Michelle Godbout, Chris Kenny, Scott Feder and his family, Mitch West and his son, David Yockleson and his family; Greg Stewart and his daughter, David Booth, Brett Jones, Dom Gillen, Ellen Spear and Lyn McCabe. Meanwhile, TARGETRAINING provided a bicycle escort: Justin Colby escorted the 5K race, while Brad Hardy and Wayne Zimmerman escorted the 10K race. Bonnie and Rob Adler were there cheering everyone on, as was Michael Gordon with his family. Lots of results followed. In the 5K, Dom won; Lyn got 3rd overall woman and Megan Kelly won her 20-29 age group. In the 10K, Kim got 3rd overall woman, Allie Lawyler got 3rd in her age group (30-39); David Booth got 1st in the 30-39 men; Brett got 3rd in the 20-29 men; David Yockleson (who was sick) got 1st in the 40-49 men. So many results, one of us (me) could not keep track of it ...Congratulations to all and what a great way to have the TT family together. See WestportNow.com for some great pictures on the event.

The TT Masters team got 2nd (Max Lippolis) and 4th (Stephen Badger) in the 63 mile race up in Palmer MA. Ed was part of the eight man break but flatted. Badger was able to bridge up.

And Kristen from the TT Tri Team won the Bronx Duathlon for the 3rd year in a row.

Finally, Suzie won a mountain bike race!

So it was a great weekend of wonderfully warm weather and great activities.

Thanks for participating!

Duathlon Nationals Update Richmond, VA

It's the first hot weekend in the South: 95 degrees here in Richmond. I just saw Max finish. If you thought that he was skinny before, you should see him now!
He took 5th overall and 3rd in his age group! Nice podium.
Trevor excelled and used a great bike leg to crush everyone in his race and took 1st! National Champ.

Tomorrow will be another hot one with a crazy 10k run course and way too many people on the bike course. I recommend putting blinders on and opening the throttle all the way 'til the finish line or heat stroke. Which ever happens 1st.

Looking ahead to this weekend

From an event standpoint, we have a LOT going on this weekend along with our regularly scheduled training program (Saturday and Sunday personal training sessions, Saturday and Sunday rides -- right now looks like a beautiful day Saturday so an outdoor ride should be in the works..., pilates classes, swim classes, running session)...

1. Sunday at Compo. -- The Westport Minuteman. We will have a tent at the event as well as a number of key participants. And we are hoping to get some volunteers on bikes to help escort the runners as they go around the course. Ali Lawlyer will be representing the women along with a number of our clients. Maybe Laurie will be there as well as Megan, too. Dom will be doing an easy run but Mitch West may come to defend his title. Maybe we'll see Dave or Greg.

2. Saturday and Sunday in Virginia -- Duathlon Nationals. Eneas, Max, and a number of clients are going down including I believe the Driscolls. We are excited to see what happens when we run bike run...

3. Sunday Quabbin Reservoir Road Race in Palmer, Mass. The Masters Team is heading up there along with a bunch of clients. Should be a blast.

And to top it all, it appears as if the weather may be quite nice!

The Weekend Recap

A spot of good weather (FINALLY!) had a very large contingent of TT regulars chomping at the bit to go outside and ride or race. Here is the WEEKEND RECAP.
Masters team kicked off the road racing spring classic season at Battenkill, NY for 60 mile road, hilly road race. Almost the full team went out there to race. got 3rd, 8th, 10th at Tour of Battenkill in the 30+ (Max Lippolis, Steven Badger, Scott Bodin). Also there were Abdul Kabia, Tom Toal, Matt Emeott and Ed Angeli. Entire team rode well. Mike Allaire got 2nd in the 50+. Bart McDonough road well in Cat 4's despite various problems training. Next up: Quabbin Road Race (63 mile event). Same team will go do 35+ plus Rob Weiss and Rick.

Did 2 outdoor rides -- about 25 participants on Saturday AM with 3 groups split between very fast, fast and medium -- 42 mile ride. Sunday did 25 mile ride that Ray Forehand organized for Pan Mass Challenge participants. Rick joined to help out group. Ray and Ann Marie hosted out of their lovely house in Southport.

Eneas dashes to Donnelly run win

The weather man predicted colder temps and light rain, just what everyone wants to play outside in, but what we awoke to was yet another day of perfect spring weather!

Jogging stroller strapped to the roof rack and me on my bike, Nancy, Caden and I made our way to a local running race in Fairfield, Donnelly Dash, this morning for a little fitness test a week out before national duathlon championships in VA.

The course was a pleasant 3.5mile test with some rollers and a bit of wind. With baby in our race engineered jogging stroller, which by the way was a gift from my TARGETRAINING coworkers the year Caden was born, Nancy quickly made her way up the start line for a brisk walk along the course leaving me to chase them down 20min later.

Small local races like this are great tune up events or form guides when preparing for bigger season goals. The smaller fields and a low key atmosphere make them low stress events that the whole family can enjoy.

After a brief 1.5 miles of gauging the strength of my fellow runners I soon found myself alone chasing down the nice Porsche Kian lead car. Suffice to say that I never caught the car but I did catch Nancy just before the finish line taking the win and ave. a respectable 5:37/mile pace.

It's been a year

A year ago, I was fortunate enough to have found out I had early-stage testicular cancer. Fortune plays a role. I went to Dr. Batter of Norwalk Urology Associates, who immediately sent me to get an ultrasound. I had a cancerous testicular tumor, which Dr. Batter removed. Then I went to the Whittingham Cancer Center, which is part of Norwalk Hospital. There Dr. Rich Frank assessed the situation (you need the tumor analyzed to know what to do). Stage 1A seminoma cancer (quite good in the overall scheme because it moves slowly and is treatable).
Off the bike for a couple of weeks so that I could heal, then I was back racing again. And then Dr. Pathare, an expert Radiation Oncologist (it means he knows how to use radiation to eradicate cancers which are susceptible to such treatment), prescribed 17 days of therapy (skipping the weekends). I continued to race through the treatment and I trained every day. I did get tired and certainly was nauseous most of the time. No, I did not lose my hair (that's chemotherapy). I did lose bone marrow cells and my red blood cell count was measurably suppressed (it has not yet fully recovered -- it takes a year or so).

Why I am retelling this story? Well, Dr. Frank has just published a book called Fighting Cancer with Knowledge and Hope: A Guide for Patients, Families, and Health Care Providers.

I recommend that anyone who has to deal with issues arising from cancer (family or friend related) should read this book from a person/hero who's entire life is devoted to helping others. Now, we are trying to get Dr. Frank to come exercise with us (he has two young boys and is a busy man, but so are we all and we know health starts with you).

He is doing two book signings:
Stamford Town Center Barnes and Nobles 4/22 at 6 pm
Westport Barnes and Nobles 4/29, 7 pm
And here's the link to the book. published by the Yale University Press.

Hope to see you there. And in the meantime, I have a few bicycle races to go to. Thanks Doc.

Dom's hi-tech swim analysis at the OTC

video

What you are looking at is Dom simulating a sighting drill while tethered to a resistance unit at the end of the pool. The system will record the changes in linear velocity and represent that in the dynamic line graph at the bottom of the frame. The slight changes in kick, stroke and turn are then recorded as the video camera follows in unison to the length of cable. From here the swim coach can analyze the information and make suggestions to the athlete on how to improve their movements. Be fast Dom!

OTC Training Week Photos

I found a few pictures of the workouts I did while out in Colo Spgs with the national team. Enjoy.

Swim analysis using SwimMetrics developed by Genadijus Sololovas Ph.D. (shown) Pretty high tech stuff! It is like a powermeter for swimming. His system can measure velocity and force throughout the swim stroke to find inefficencies.

We did a short ride to Garden of the Gods park with Dirk Friel and the crew from TrainingPeaks. It was sunny, warm, but very windy.

We ran/walked The Inline in Manitou Springs. It was the old rail bed for a cog railway. It is 1.02 miles long, but gains 2011 feet in elevation. The average grade is 41% and the maximum grade is 68%! The first photo is at the bottom, the second picture is at the top. (w/Susan Williams Olympic bronze medalist, 2004 Triathlon)

Trade Team Week at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

On April 5-10th I got the chance to return to the OTC for the first time in 6 years to attend the USAT Trade Team Camp. The week was a chance to meet other team members, USAT staff, and hear about our supporting sponsors. It was also a great chance to work with some other top coaches on form and technique. Here are a few photos. More to come. Enjoy.

Nice Work Guys

Eneas wins Bethel Spring Series GC

Race promoter Aki wrote this:

A wowser of a race, it seemed totally strung out the whole day. Many of the "two-racers", i.e. the ones on their second race, not the Cat 2s, came off in clumps as the fresh strong 1s and 2s drilled it from the gun. Target Training, with the overall leader Eneas Freyre, brought out some guns to help control the field.

A group finally made it clear, with all the favorites in it, but with three to go, Freyre ripped the break apart with a vicious attack. Only McGinley, Hurst, and Borgia could follow, and in the end, McGinley won the sprint handily. Freyre took second, wrapping up the overall.

The rest of the finishers straggled in as the remaining groups all disintegrated in the final hectic laps. Christopher Fisher (Priority Health) tok fifth, with Funk following close behind in sixth. Matthew Baldwin took the final point available in seventh.

Freyre wrapped up the overall, and his team Target Training took the team trophy.

Congratulations Eneas

Review of Castelli Insolito Jacket on VELONEWS

The NEW definition of One-Stop-Shopping
There aren't many products that follow up on their claims to the the end-all-to-be-all, but in this case the Castelli Insolito Radiation Jacket is just the ticket (to use another cliche). This garment is more than just high on the cool factor for style, it actually is a modular system that can adapt to whatever mother nature throws at you. Velonews did a detailed review that you can check out here .

Great Day at the Beach

Today I traveled up to Madison, CT to watch the 10th annual Brians Beachside Off Road Duathlon. TARGETRAINING was represented by four people in the race. The sun was out and the winds were cold and strong, but that didn't slow our racers down. Dave Booth took 3rd place overall in the race, Suzie took 1st place overall for the women, Kim Driscoll took 3rd place overall for the women and Sam Goater also put in a great race taking 1st in the 25-29 age group and 9th Overall, narrowly beating Suzie at the finish line, ( though one tends to wonder if maybe she would have caught him had she not been in her car using her inhaler when the start horn of the race sounded.)

Overall this was a great showing for everybody who raced. Congratulations to everyone, It was a lot of fun to watch.
