Cervélo Bicycles is a company that has taken the bicycle world not by storm but by engineering.  Started in 1995, this company boosts a number of achievements in this timeframe.  First, Cervélo has become an icon in triathlons, where its P series bikes are  the ride of choice at any price point. Second, Cervélo has applied aerodynamic design to road frames in its S series and lightweight design in its R series frames.  Its' impact on the road cycling scene was evident with Team CSC, who has ridden to victory in multiple settings, including Alpe D'Huez, Paris Roubaix and the World Time Trial Championships.   This is a bike company that sets the standards others try to emulate.  Now, we will see Cervélo grow to a new level by its creation of the Cervélo TestTeam.

Cervélo has a focused distribution strategy and only goes to a select set of dealers in the U.S. TARGETRAINING is fortunate to be Cervélo's partner in lower Fairfield County and hopes that you who should be fascinated by what Cervélo offers has a chance to stop reading about Cervélo's latest wizardry to visit TARGETRAINING to see, touch and try these machines in person.  All Cervélo road bicycles are full carbon with the exception of the S1 (formerly the Team Soloist), which is aluminum.  Of its triathlon frames, Cervélo only makes the P1 in aluminum; the P2, P3 and P4 are full carbon framesets.

MSRP:  $4500 frameset

All the superlatives that can be written will be written about this frame. As good as the SLC-SL was, Vroomen and White's engineering team did themselves one better. Let's get to the short strokes: this is the most aerodynamic frameset, among the lightest, among the stiffest, and now, among the most vertically compliant. This is only available as a frameset, but considering the improvements and the fact that the price has not gone up, you've got yourselves the best performance value in the world, bar none.

The founders of Cervélo think this is the best frame they have built to date, better than the SLC-SL (which it replaces) and the R3-SL.

S2

MSRP: $5500 dura-ace full bike; $3900 ultegra full bike; $2800 frameset

Well, you know this is a fast frame. CSC won a lot of races on this frame.  And you know it is light, just not as light as the S3. Now this aerodynamic wonder has two price points from which to choose: (a) budget worthy ultegra at $3900 or (b) new dura-ace at $5500.

S1

MSRP: $2200 full bike!

This ultegra bike gives you a considerable amount  of the aerodynamic advantages of its much more expensive S2 and S3 cousins, while at the same time also offering a light and stiff ride. Why so inexpensive? Of course, it's made out of aluminum. Is aluminum bad? Or are you still just very lucky that Cervélo still makes aluminum bikes? We think the latter.  This is an incredible value for a bike that will help you go faster. And allows you to stick to your budget.

R3-SL (Yes, this SL also stands for Super Light)

MSRP: $3900 frameset (just $300 more than 2008)

This is Cervelo's sub 900 gram full carbon wonder frame. This is the best of the best.  If you have to have it, this is the it.  Call us up or stop by if you are interested...This is a very comfortable ride, so those who want a bike that climbs forever but is easy on the body, you've found your ride. There is a reason this is good in Paris Roubaix.  The full bike is built up with a Dura-ace kit.

While the R3-SL is not as aero as its richer cousin the SLC-SL, it is pencil thin in the weight and seat stay department.  Those seat stays make it the most comfortable, smooth riding of the machines Cervelo has to offer.  So, let's say this is the sports sedan offering from Cervelo, one that happens to corner and climb incredibly well.

R3

MSRP: $5700 full bike dura-ace; $4900 SRAM Force; $3000 frameset

A sub 1000 gram full carbon frame which is as stiff as it is light and rides comfortably without breaking? Impossible? No, just the Cervélo R3.  Yes you can get the R3-SL which is yet another 100 grams lighter.  However, this is a pretty sweet ride and worth taking a long look at if you are in the market for a great bike.

RS

MSRP: $3500 ultegra full bike; $2400 frameset

In Cervélo's own words, it received requests for a longer headtube length to accommodate riders whose optimal position requires higher handlebar positions. Since fit is such a critical element of bicycles, this is an excellent addition to Cervélo's line of road frames.  This higher position is not necessarily a reflection of rider flexibility, although that is a factor in choosing this frame.  To help smaller riders who don't worry about rapid wheel changes, the RS comes in a 650 frame for its smallest size.

P4

MSRP: $6800 dura-ace full bike; $4800 frameset

It's not yet available, but you may place an order now.

"The P4 is the fastest bike ever in the wind tunnel, including both UCI-legal and illegal bikes", according to Cervélo. “The P4 is the biggest leap we have ever made in aero bike technology,” said Phil White, co-founder of Cervélo. Highlights include:

  • $ MM in R&D
  • > 2 months of intensive testing at the San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel
  • "Significantly faster than the P3 while chieving equivalent or better performance relative to stiffness, power transmission, low weight and comfort."
  • Optimized Aero Tube Shapes including new asymmetric aero chain stays
  • Seat stays are pitched forward to reduce frontal surface area and their joints with the seat tube are aero-optimized
  • Custom fork (designed by Cervélo) integrates seamlessly into the head tube and downtube
  • Optimized the spacing between the tires and wheels, the frame and the fork (tested >75 designs)
  • P4 does not have a front wheel cutout (Cervélo maintains this only works in a wind tunnel -- one turn and it increases drag)
  • Custom break that fits in a recess instead of above or underneath the chainstays making it invisible to the wind (not just the eye) and 30% lighter
  • P4 is faster with its bottle while traditional bottle shapes reduce proper airfoil tubes efficiency

P3

MSRP: $4500 dura-ace full bike; $3300 frameset

This frameset has set the standard for all time trial and triathlon framesets.  Is it the best? We're looking for a flaw. If you find one please call us to let us know what it is.  Or please come down to see one of these and test ride it for yourself. There are more expensive but no more effective frames for going fast on your own. And the dura-ace bike is great value.

P2

MSRP: $2700 ultegra full bike; $3200 dura-ace full bike; $2000 frameset

Is this a knock-out of a bike? The winner of Kona in 2007 was not even wearing an aero helmet! Just her ability and a P2C and that was enough. A killer bike at a price that we think is compelling.  There are a lot of triathlon bikes more expensive but very few as good.
