TARGETING HEALTH: TARGETRAINING brings its innovative brand of wellness training to Fairfield County.

December 2005 – Westport, CT. TARGETRAINING, an innovative new company devoted to improving athletic performance and health, has opened at 772 Post Road East in Westport, CT.

Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Rick Spear, a resident of Westport since 1997, is a cycling enthusiast, having competed in amateur racing since 1992. A graduate of Stanford University, he advises firms in the securities industry. However, he focuses much of his time to his two passions: his family (wife Ellen and two daughters), and cycling. “Working long hours in an intense field makes you realize how important a healthy lifestyle is,” said Spear. “And there’s more to it than exercise alone.”

TARGETRAINING  is rooted in Rick’s deeply held conviction that “success requires balancing fitness intelligently with family life and career aspirations.”

TARGETRAINING caters to the individual seeking general fitness or wishing to undertake multisport events. TARGETRAINING recognizes that people who have commitments to career and families tend to have complicated schedules and require targeted, designed programs that are manageable in the context of their busy lives.

The company’s philosophy rests on creating programs that incorporate the sports science methodology of progression and peaking, which helps keep athletes fresh, stimulated, and focused. Spear said, “Our mission is to help individuals identify and meet fitness goals, whether that means improving strength, aerobic capacity or eating habits—or simply reducing stress through more rest/recovery. To this end, we consider ourselves responsible for helping clients develop fitness over time.”

TARGETRAINING’s team of “health managers” will offer comprehensive, personalized training programs clients based on client objectives, “real-world” constraints and readiness. “We will not focus on fitness but on healthy fitness,” he said. “Training has to be enjoyable and has to help our clients maintain appropriate diets, in order to succeed.” It also assesses progress through testing. “We lever the best thinking in sports science by measuring progress through aerobically focused physiological testing and monitoring,” said Spear.

TARGETRAINING has a particular emphasis on endurance athletics, and within that on multi-sport and cycling. It offers individual coaching and group-based training sessions for recreational and elite tri-athletes and cyclists. It is currently offering an off-season multi-sport and cycling training program. This will include outdoor running and cycling as well as indoor sessions for swimming, running, and “virtual reality” cycling. It is also offering technique-improvement clinics for running, swimming and cycling.

TARGETRAINING offers assistance to people at every level of fitness, skill, experience, and capability. “Your body, especially in the context of a complicated life, is a non-trivial asset to improve,” said Spear. “So, we take a non-trivial approach to help. Since we are practicing athletes, we live the same issues and that allows us to realistically advise you.”
